DirectNIC DNS Poisoned?

January 9th, 2008 jeff Posted in geek No Comments »

For some bizarre reason our internal office DNS server was set to use DirectNIC as a forwarder rather than the root servers for any query.  All of the sudden people started complaining that their browsers stopped working. After we located the entry to the forwarder and reset it back to root, I started poking around with the DirectNIC nameservers.   Both of the published ones come back with 204.251.15.176 for any query.

Guess someone is going to have spend the night digging through DNS logs.  Kinda weird being that the IP address they are dishing out is allocated to someone in their datacenter. In case you were asleep during Katrina, DirectNIC — based in New Orleans — kept their operations up and running while providing one of the few first hand accounts of the goings on. Update: My bad.  Their DNS servers — which do respond as lookup servers — when queried for a record for which they are not authoritative, chose to dish out an IP address pointing to one of their own search sites, searchnut.com, which apparently is linkbait.  Someone had this problem with them back in 2005.
